Landscapes

John Ambrose

The small seaside towns of Cornwall, England have nurtured many famous impressionist artists, attracted by its beauty and tranquility. John Ambrose has been capturing these atmospheric scenes since 1962. His water glistens and shimmers, his clouds flow majestically across the sky and the jetties, boats and buildings, contracting with the dark against the light, are testaments to his mastery of chiaroscuro.

John Baughman

John Baughman grew up in Western Michigan, the oldest of five children. From an early age, he loved to draw and mix his own paints. A rebel at heart, he sought to experiment with his work and was greatly encouraged throughout his youth by a neighbor, herself a Director of Art, who saw his potential and encouraged his artistic leanings. John attended seven colleges before graduating and ended up successfully running his own advertising firm, which allowed him to take advantage of his writing and drawing skills. Along the way, he met his wife Janet, herself an accomplished artist. After raising three children, they moved west and now raise and train dressage horses and devote full time to their art work. Baughman’s work is deeply influenced by the environment and the beauty that surrounds him. He constantly tries new mediums and possesses an innate sense of arrangements and space.

Pica Birt

Born in Romania in 1964, Pica Birt graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelors degree in Architecture. Fascinated by space, she wanted to take time to study and understand the relationship between solid and void, light and shadow, and the importance of searching for a concept and the meaning of proportions, texture and color. Upon graduation, she immediately shifted to the Ontario College of Art and became an independent artist. Birt’s art explores the surface of a moment. There is a sense of oscillation between what is certain and uncertain, the transient impression of things that surround us. Sensuousness defines Birt’s paintings. Her artworks seem to be captured in time at the moment of their most mysterious vibrancy. They emanate optimism and energy. Every surface is filled with color and texture. Sharp edges and contrasting colors produce images that reveal sceneries, objects and environments of a familiar but mysterious calm.

Salvador Caballero

Salvador Caballero was born in 1944 "with painting in his blood." Self-taught, Caballero was deeply influenced by his uncle, Vincente del Olmo, a serious painter who inspired his nephew to capture the essence of Mediterranean life, from Spanish courtyards to Barcelona streets to countryside farmhouses to lake scenes. Caballero began his professional career as an illustrator and designer of book and magazine covers, which helped him acquire the agility and precise aptitude for drawing. While he is best known for his landscapes, he has also produced stunning portraits and still lifes. Caballero's work has been exhibited throughout Europe and the United States.

Rosa Canto

Rosa Canto was born in Alcoy, Alicante, Spain in July, 1968.  Her artistic studies started at the Fine Arts School in Alcoy and continued in Valencia at the San Carlos Fine Arts University.  Canto is a master with paint.  On her canvases she shapes her landscapes, infusing them with the great flavor and character of her native country.  Her favored subjects are landscapes.  Forgetting the romanticism often seen, she looks for the nature and realism in her subjects.  She takes a visual picture of fields full of brilliantly colored flowers or serene Spanish villages.  Her goal is to be set apart from the traditional subjects of the artists from her region, by always portraying her homeland from her personal point of view.

Jean Sforza Dalziel

Jean was raised in Cleveland, Ohio, attended the Cleveland Institute of Art and graduated from Ohio University with a B.F.A. in 1968. In her own words... “The focus of my work is to meld abstract composition with objects in reality. I use acrylic paint to create luminosity, volume, transparency and density in an effort to obtain richly woven surfaces. I use a combination of color and energized brushwork to create a sensuous reality of light and space, not matching a color in nature, rather matching its effect.” Her work is held in private collections throughout the United States.

Doug Hunt

Ever since I can remember, I’ve dreamed of being an artist. And...like other young artists, Disney gave me my first exposure to the possibilities. Then in the 60’s, psychedelic posters and hot rod art were probably my first exercises in seriously working from my imagination. Even in the military, I ended up as a staff artist and photographer, my first practical experience as a commercial artist, graphic designer and photographer. For the most part, my commercial work was detailed pen and ink drawings. Because of this, my fine art tended to be loose and less structured. In the early 80’s, I started working with oil pastels. It was during this time my work became more impressionistic. In 2002, I began doing etchings where my line drawing experience came in handy for the initial projects. Before long, I found myself exploring looser, less ridged techniques. I still prefer to work from my imagination. After so many years of creating imagery that had specific requirements, I really enjoy the freedom to create my own reality. Watching an image develop in front of you is really fascinating. My landscapes may be influenced by the desire to escape, to be somewhere quiet and unhurried. My favorite pieces are always the ones that have nothing much going on in them, just open space and an inviting path to nowhere in particular.

While living in California, he studied under the late William H. Yellend, the renowned restorationist, which provided the opportunity to further hone his tranquil, naturalistic style. The artist's work hangs in the Clinton Presidential Library and in private collections throughout the United States.

Scott Jones

Scott Jones was born in Cleveland in 1958. He studied at the prestigious Columbus College of Art and Design and presently works in his beloved painting studios in Key West, Northern Kentucky and on the shores of Lake Michigan. An intriguing aura surrounds Jones’ paintings. His work contains something engaging – a mood, movement and often exotic use of light that embraces his viewers and invites them into the work as if they were attending one of the many theatrical performances or café scenes Jones so loves to create. He calls them “scene stealers.” In his travels to the great romantic cities, he captures the mood-drenched scenes on canvas. One can’t help being taken in by the festive attitude and timeless moods created by Scott. In addition to Jones’ participation in dozens of one man exhibitions, he has participated in countless group shows, designed theatrical sets and acquired numerous public and private commissions. His work is exhibited and collected throughout the United States and France.

Jeff Koehn

Jeff Koehn is one of the hottest young artists in the United States today. Born in a small Wisconsin town, his first grade teacher was prescient when she told him: “You will be a famous artist some day.” Jeff received his formal art education from the Art Institute of Colorado, where he graduated with honors in December, 1995. While at the Art institute, he received extensive training in pastel, oil and acrylic painting from world renowned artists Doug Dawson, Lynn Kircher and Don Long. In 1995 he was awarded First Place in the national Creative “Geanie” Student Competition. Jeff’s style has evolved from early emphasis on photo-realism with the use of pastels in portraits. His earlier illustrative work has appeared in numerous publications. As he shifted to oil and acrylics, he has become absorbed with the excitement of color and texture, refining his paintings with dry brush techniques that lend both complexity and subtlety to his distinctive style. His influences come from Vermeer’s use of light spilling across his paintings, and also from John Singer Sergeant’s lush portraits.

Irina Koulikov

Born in Kokand Uzbekistan, Irina Koulikov studied fine art at Moscow University. Before turning to painting, she was a student of music, studying at the Leningrad Conservatory and singing in the Rimsky-Korakov Opera Theatre. Her interest in the rhythms and harmony of nature is what first drew her to music. While the translucent light effects of William Turner’s paintings may be traced in Irina’s oeuvre, it is the 19th-century French romantic tradition that emerges as the most prominent influence for the artist. The soft brushstroke, diffuse light, and muted palette all recall Camille Corot’s portraits of the Fontainebleau Forest. Irina uses acrylic paint, applied in opaque layers to create volume. Most essential to her technique is the liberal use of liquid encaustic. In addition to creating a thick and dynamic texture, the wax medium also serves to seemingly age the canvas by softening and yellowing its color. The result is a dream-like quality in her work. Irina lives and works in Toronto. Her work is exhibited throughout North America.

Omar Hamdi (“Malva”)

Malva is a legendary name and an important personality in the American art scene. A deeply religious man and a painter from Syria, the country of light and color, he represents an attempt to create a “Gesamtkunstwerk,” the integration of intellectual, philosophical, aesthetic and social values in a sensual art form. Born as the first child of a poor shepherd’s family in Tel Naif, a small village of mud cottages, Malva has had a hard life. His natural skills as a painter were not supported by his family. He left his family at age 17 and received much acclaim for his work under his assumed name. But, for political purposes, he was not able to work. He was drafted in the Syrian military as a graphic artist for seven years. He ended up with a wife and family in Beirut, where he escaped with false passports. His wife then left him (with his children) never to be heard from again. A second wife and family allowed him to restart his life in Austria, where he lives today. Through it all, Malva’s creativity seems endless. His naturalistic style gives way to a new expressionism and returns to the colors and lights of his homeland.

Tim O'Toole

Timothy O'Toole was born in Dayton, Ohio, started painting at an early age and went on to earn a B.F.A. from the University of Cincinnati. He is particularly fond of landscapes and is inspired by the work of Claude Monet. Tim's work is classified as "contemporary impressionism." He is best known for his plein-air painting and his ability to capture mood and lighting. In his words…

"When I am in the field, I react to whatever captivates me and I work quickly to capture what I see as the light changes. It's a mental exercise. When a scene captivates my attention, I paint, spreading the paint over the canvas using brushes, palette knives and my fingers…anything to capture the moment."

Fortunato Ornaghi

Ornaghi was born in the Lombard area of Italy in 1930. Orphaned at a very early age, he grew up in an artisans’ institute where he studied design. He later attended the Art Academy, under the direction of Italy’s well-known artist, “Parma.”

Ornaghi enjoys the beauty that he says can only be found in nature. In fact, he spends much of his time in the open air with his portable palette and canvas. His palette is rich in shading, from the cold, slightly misty colors of dawn breaking, to the warm reddish tones of a summer sunset, the tender green of spring and the white winter of snow.

The artist’s work is exhibited throughout Europe and the United States.

Kathleen Doud Reilley

Kathleen Doud Reilley, a fourth generation resident of Ventura, California, was born into a family of artists. She grew up with easels, paints, pastels, art classes and gallery visits. She received her B.A. from Chico State, with a major in Liberal Studies and a minor in Art. After a teaching career lasting several years, she turned to serigraphs for the next 20 years, printmaking on paper, fabrics and tiles. Her focus on encaustic painting only began in 2003. Doud Reilley’s compositions are paintings in the encaustic medium, representing aspects of nature, from landscapes to seascapes, often focusing on the horizon line, the line that separates us from our place on earth and the heavens. Encaustic paint consists of beeswax and pigment with a resin base. It must be heated before application, each layer of paint fused to the layer beneath. Encaustic paint can be opaque or translucent, giving a unique depth to the finished product. And, when heated, the beeswax smells divine, often attracting hummingbirds to the sweet honeyed fragrance in Kathleen’s studio.

Sacha Barrette (“Sacha”)

Born in Saguenay Lac St-Jean in 1965, Sacha left his native region for Montreal, obtained his Bachelor’s degree in graphic design from the University of Quebec in 1982 and worked in the visual arts field for numerous advertising firms. During this time, he taught private painting classes until he decided to devote himself entirely to his art. Sacha works with color in such a way as to keep its original purity, thereby giving the subject its unique shape, texture and light, all applied “almost flat.” Hence, the colors are allowed to express themselves. His travels throughout Canada, Latin America and the United States have allowed him to build his palette of colors and reaffirm his style. His work is exhibited throughout North and South America.

Robin Scott

Robin Scott was born in 1958. He studied art in London and Edinburgh. During his early studies, he concentrated on the European School of traditional landscape painting and later developed a more individualistic style for his work. Scott’s lovely paintings express the infinitely various moods of nature. It is vital to him that his paintings capture not only the physical landscape, but also its atmospheric qualities. His New England landscapes are especially delicate and poetic. He often paints on location in the White Mountains, capturing the wildflowers, birch trees, villages and lakes that come into view on his canvases. Scott’s colorful autumn paintings are very much enjoyed and collected in the United States and Canada for their warmth and beauty.

Dennis Sheehan

Dennis Sheehan (b. 1950) has work in major public and private collections, including the White House. Sheehan paints in the Barbizon style with remarkable authority and faithful adherence to his 19th century precursors. In the tradition of the Tonalist painters, Sheehan creates landscapes of mood, affected by nature's changing seasons. Sheehan's work is influenced by the work of 19th century painter George Inness. Like Inness, he employs the dark palette and thickly pigmented surfaces of the French Barbizon School, all the while maintaining a muted Tonalist chromatic scheme.
