Carol Browning

Carol Browning earned her BFA (with honors) in painting from University of Colorado Denver.  She spent 20 years as an Interior Designer, all the while keeping her passion for painting alive, until she made the decision to give painting her full attention.  Recent paintings by Browning are a series of abstract expressionist work that delve into composition, juxtaposition of form and color. They are about passion, purposeful brushwork and movement of paint and line across the canvas. Each piece begins with a bright color palette, influenced by western light. Layers of neutrals, washes and gestural marks are added until only hints of the original conception remain. It is akin to peering into the artist’s soul. The artist works and lives in Denver.  Her work is held in collections all over the United States.

Downe Burns

Downe Burns is a Texas native.  He is largely a self-taught artist with a distinct style that has almost universal appeal.  Downe’s desire is to create works that are both emotive and pleasant.  He avoids the darker moods of the environment, choosing to allow his imagery to create positive feelings.  He especially likes things that are old.  They produce a feeling of substance rich in time and warm with use.  With rich and bright colors, a new life is breathed into something maybe forgotten or gone unnoticed.  Burns has exhibited throughout the United States.

Antoine Claes

Antoine Claes was born in Montreal in 1971 of Canadian and Belgian nationality. Abstract notions like verticality, pictorial organization and treatment of light inspire his work. The references stem from the urban universe like technology or architecture. The research is aesthetic and his commitment is based on letting the matter inspire, instead of trying to justify it in another way. Nonetheless, the paintings have titles and themes that inspire the creation of the artwork. Claes has a passion for photography and this discipline is a reference and an inspiration in his paintings.

Jerome Fisher

Jerome Fisher was born in Stockton, California in 1946 and began drawing at age 17.  Two years later, he enrolled at St. Mary’s College of Maryland and began his formal art education under the guidance of acclaimed master painter and watercolorist, Peter Egeli.  He later transferred to the Maryland Institute of Art, where he shifted his focus to more abstract subjects.  Fisher’s work is distinctive in that he layers his paint to produce a complexity of colors coming through color, thereby creating a very rich surface effect.  There is more to his paintings than meets the eye.  Despite the simplicity of the subject matter, interest is created through the artist’s technique.  Jerome has lived and painted professionally in Maui, Northern California and Guam.  His work can be found throughout the United States and Asia.

Thomas Hamann

Born in Stuttgart in 1955, Thomas Hamann studied at the Technical University of Design in Aachen, Germany and the Academie de Toegepaste Kunsten in Maastricht, Netherlands. In Hamann’s words: “It has been a long time since I could say that I’ve ‘created’ a piece or that I’ve made something. I feel more and more that I am guided, that I put myself into that flow. If I let happen what wants to be expressed, then I experience a feeling that profoundly touches me--a strong sense of harmony and that the work is just right. Sometimes it feels like memories and I wonder to which place it will guide me and I follow as far as it goes. Nature also attracts me strongly. Therefore, every morning I go into the nearby forest. And each time I experience gratitude and peace. There is a perception of clarity here with direct experience of the laws of nature and its rhythm.

Scott Jones

Scott Jones was born in Cleveland in 1958. He studied at the prestigious Columbus College of Art and Design and presently works in his beloved painting studios in Key West, Northern Kentucky and on the shores of Lake Michigan. An intriguing aura surrounds Jones’ paintings. His work contains something engaging – a mood, movement and often exotic use of light that embraces his viewers and invites them into the work as if they were attending one of the many theatrical performances or café scenes Jones so loves to create. He calls them “scene stealers.” In his travels to the great romantic cities, he captures the mood-drenched scenes on canvas. One can’t help being taken in by the festive attitude and timeless moods created by Scott. In addition to Jones’ participation in dozens of one man exhibitions, he has participated in countless group shows, designed theatrical sets and acquired numerous public and private commissions. Georges Maman

Of Spanish decent, Georges Maman was born in Algeria in 1954. He now lives and works in Montreal. By intertwining elements of abstraction and figuration, Maman creates what he describes as "city portraits." In his own words… "I refer to the space I paint as a city because the term symbolizes unity. I paint portraits of cities, of space, or grouping of people… The city is my chosen context; it is the pretext of my paintings. The human figure appears unexpectedly. I made the conscious decision of always representing Man in the vertical position to show Him in action, in an urban context." Georges work is part of several public and private collections in France, Belgium, Germany, Canada and the United States.

Tom Matucci

Known for his rich textures and atmospheric imagery, Tom Matucci balances abstraction and representation into an exquisite fusion that pushes traditional boundaries of painting. Moody landscapes are surrounded by complex textures. A tactile look is achieved, delighting the sense of touch as well as sight. His work has a captivating earthy quality that strikes a primordial chord with the viewer. Tom works intuitively, evolving from his inner self. He never knows how a painting will end up; he lets the process guide him. Matucci's work is at once dynamic and powerful, quiet and moody. His paintings have been called dimensional poetry, conveying a textural story left to the viewer's own interpretation. Tom's artwork has been exhibited in solo and group shows. His work may be found in galleries nationwide and in private and corporate collections worldwide. His collectors span the globe from Napa Valley to Hollywood, Chicago to Boston, South Africa to Paris.

Heather McAlpine

Heather McAlpine was born in Scotland in 1962. She moved to London to study where she earned a BA in Fine Art (1st class Honors) from the University of East London and an MA in painting from the Royal College of Art. McAlpine says: “The West Coast forests and sea have provided inspiration for my recent paintings. Armed with my camera and macro lens, I collect images of seaweed, leaves and lichen. They provide the ‘raw materials,’ the starting point for my work in the studio. The actual material of paint and the painterly marks serve as metaphors for energy, movement and growth. Rich texture is achieved by building up layers of color, suggesting time and evolution. During the process, the images become pared down, leaving elemental marks. My ultimate aim is to explore the relationships between abstraction, color and the vitality of the natural world.” Heather has exhibited widely in the UK, including Oxford, Southampton and London, including the Royal Academy Summer Show. Emigrating to Vancouver in 1999, she continues to be inspired by the natural world.

Katharine McGuinness

Katharine McGuinness is a professional printmaker. She earned a BFA from the University of Colorado in 1976 and has taught at the college level. Her most recent work is an abstract series of "Monotypes," rich with colors that are bold and uplifting, moody and alluring. A monotype is a painting done by the artist, and in McGuinness' case, with lithography inks onto a printing plate. This painting is then transferred onto 100% rag paper through an etching press. Katharine works on a drawing composition first, then uses that composition as a basis for creating a series of works repeating or changing colors as design elements. Some images may be similar to each other, but each piece is painted onto the plate freeform by the artist, with ever changing color and technique. There is no edition; each piece is unique. Katharine's work is held in collections throughout the United States.

Naira

Born in 1966 in Armenia, Naira began painting as a teenager and studied at the University of Fine Arts and Theatre in Yerevan, the largest city and capital of Armenia, where she majored in industrial design. She immigrated to the US in 1991, where her artistic interests evolved into the throwing and hand-building of ceramics. Naira’s interest in ceramics was aided by the influence and critique of her husband Rafik, who studied fine arts and sculpture at the University level in Austria. Recently, Naira and Rafik have combined their talents in the studio attached to their southern California house to create ceramic tile wood tables, wall sculptures and functional pottery, all inspired by nature’s countless variations of shapes, colors, and plays of light. Their three young children, who happily make use of all of the varied materials and hands-on instructions available in mom and dad’s studio, visit them throughout the day.

Kathleen Doud Reilley

Kathleen Doud Reilley, a fourth generation resident of Ventura, California, was born into a family of artists. She grew up with easels, paints, pastels, art classes and gallery visits. She received her B.A. from Chico State, with a major in Liberal Studies and a minor in Art. After a teaching career lasting several years, she turned to serigraphs for the next 20 years, printmaking on paper, fabrics and tiles. Her focus on encaustic painting only began in 2003. Doud Reilley’s compositions are paintings in the encaustic medium, representing aspects of nature, from landscapes to seascapes, often focusing on the horizon line, the line that separates us from our place on earth and the heavens. Encaustic paint consists of beeswax and pigment with a resin base. It must be heated before application, each layer of paint fused to the layer beneath. Encaustic paint can be opaque or translucent, giving a unique depth to the finished product. And, when heated, the beeswax smells divine, often attracting hummingbirds to the sweet honeyed fragrance in Kathleen’s studio.

Joe Scoppa

Joe Scoppa was born and raised in Australia and has been painting for over 30 years. He earned a Master of Studio Arts degree from Sydney College of the Arts at the University of Sydney in 2004. Scoppa's interests are in appropriation, color theory, aesthetics and the use of language as image in art. He often begins with the appropriation of images, mostly on magazine paper and then lets his imagination take over. The finished work rarely resembles the starting point, although there are elements of the original color or imagery in the end product. The artist's work is currently on exhibit at the Contemporary Design Establishment in Sydney.

Michael Rozenvain was born in Kiev in the Ukraine in 1963.  He attended art school in Kiev and later studied at the Lvov Academy of Applied Art.  He immigrated to Israel in 1990.  The sensual language and texture takes precedence over the subject matter, but the flowers are always present in all their rich full-blown glory.  Vitality is unquestionably the foremost feature of his subject matter and stays in the mind’s eye long after seeing his work.  Rozenvain has exhibited his work throughout the United States and Israel, as well as Johannesburg and the UK.

During this time, he taught private painting classes until he decided to devote himself entirely to his art. Philip Saxon

Philip Saxon was born and raised in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. His passion for art began in 6th grade during a class field trip to the Milwaukee Art Museum. He went on to earn a BFA at the University of Wisconsin (Milwaukee) and a MFA at Northern Illinois University. Saxon’s work is strongly influenced by the work of the early modernists, especially Picasso, Matisse, Nolde and Giacometti. His paintings express his own journey of self-discovery and self-disclosure. Believing that we all experience a common range of emotions in life, Saxon attempts to convey, in abstract terms, these universal experiences. His objective is to provoke a personal response in the viewer as well. Saxon lives and works in Racine, Wisconsin with his wife of 20 years. His drawings and paintings have been included in numerous exhibitions and collections throughout the United States.

Anke Schofield

Anke Schofield was born in Ithaca, New York in 1972 and was apprenticed as a professional photographer assistant when she was still in the 8th grade. During high school, she apprenticed with a number of artists in the New York area. Her work produced a scholarship to Savannah College of Art and Design where she earned a Fine Arts degree. Anke’s interest in color theory and painting has produced a greater creative stimulus and inspiration than she had known in her photographic work. In her words…”My work is inspired photographically, but I take it beyond the ordinary representation to create a harmonious blend of texture with composition.” Schofield’s work is exhibited throughout the United States.

Tiersky

P.T. Tiersky was born in a small, farming community in Illinois in 1959. During his growing up years, he often mixed artistic papers and paint with found objects. After a move to Southern California in 1985, this hobby turned into a full-time endeavor. Domenic Valela
(1950-2007)

Domenic Valela was born in Calabria, Italy, but spent most of his life in Montreal. He sketched continuously throughout his early childhood years, but also acquired a technical interest that evolved into earning a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Concordia University. During this time, he sustained his interest in art by continuously taking art classes as well. In 1999, a brief illness became the catalyst to increase his focus on producing art. He moved away from pure realistic painting by exploring more abstract subject matter. The combination of his engineering background and artistic leanings shows through in many of his works.

Helen Zarin

Helen Zarin was born in Shirae, Iran in 1970.  She was recognized early as having extraordinary talent and studied under the well known Persian artist, Saber.  She later enrolled in the Art & Culture Society, a national organization for gifted Persian artists.  There she was recognized by the Iranian Society as a “God Gifted Talented Artist.”  Conditions in her native country eventually compelled Helen to turn elsewhere for creative nourishment.  In Helen’s words “Hard work and God given talent are not enough for an artist to progress and blossom; Creative freedom in the right atmosphere is essential.”  She journeyed first to Europe, where she displayed her work in Vienna.  Helen has lived and worked in Baltimore, Maryland since 1993.  Zarin’s work is displayed throughout the United States.
